Default microsoft GPS receiever from streets and trips - any good?

So I found it for $50 for the 2009 version with a USB GPS.

That's about $25 for GPS, and $25 for the software that I need anyway.

Has anyone used this to war drive?

Also, what are some receiver-only GPS that I can buy?

$50 for the one on the site is a bit expensive as you can see.

It's $36.95, and should work with any NMEA 0183 program(like inSSIDer).

Well I decided to get microsoft streets and trips 2009 GPS edition.

    Will that work with inssider?

It should, it gives NMEA data like inSSIDer requires. As long as the port settings are set right(baud rate, flow control, data bits, etc.), it should work.

Oh well I'm not sure what to put those settings at...can anyone help?

    Default doesn't seem to work...

    Pics of model number/etc

It says "waiting for data" then says "GPS: not detected on com4"

I dont know anything about the unit, but found a post somewhere with the following settings

4800 bits per second, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and set Flow Control to NONE.
Which should be the insider defaults.

Does it work ok with the supplied nav software ?

It is NEMA V2.0 as far as I could find.

casemods, the "waiting for data" may simply mean that everything is functioning as it should, but there simply is no data from GPS satellites being received because you are testing this indoor. Is this a possibility?

The second error, "GPS: not detected on com4", is something that is confusing me because normally I would expect one or the other, but not both of these errors at the same time. I'd suggest to unplug the USB GPS receiver, and then plug it into a different com port. In Streets & Trips then scan port to discover your GPS unit.

By the way, there is now new version of Streets & Trips 2010 with some features you may like.
