Default how can 2.4 network adapter "see" and evaluate 5 gig signals

I'm using an elitebook 8440P which comes, as far as I'm aware, with a 2.4 gig network adapter.

However when I run InSSIDer it can "see" and evaluate my dual band router on both frequencies.

I'm curious to know how my single band network adapter can "see" both frequencies of the router.

By the way, I am completely naive when it comes to Wi-Fi networks and the like so, could anyone who replies please explain the technical job may be necessary to answer the question I've asked.

    Many thanks,

    Peregrinus

I suspect that you are not viewing any 5 GHz wifi signals, but are viewing your dual band router's status directly via a 2.4 GHz connection.
You did not post a screen shot, but here is what a 5 GHz signal looks like.
